Over the last few years the Easter Egg hunt has been hampered by wet grounds. Do you think the Easter Egg Hunt should be moved to Reitz Bowl and it's artificial surface?

md_2011_footballKYLE GRANTHAM / Courier & Press Mater Dei quarterback Dane Maurer, right, cries as he hugs running back Cody Hess, left, at the end of Mater Dei's 27-16 win over Guerin Catholic on Saturday afternoon, November 19, 2011. Mater Dei overcame a 16-7 halftime deficit to win the game and advace to the Class 2A state championship game in Indianapolis. While his players were aching to advance to state for the first time in their high school football careers, it has been a 10-year journey for intense Mater Dei High School coach Mike Goebel, who was wrapped even tighter than usual before Saturday's Class 2A semistate at Reitz Bowl.

"This team has been under a lot of pressure because they've had success not just this year, but throughout their high school careers," Goebel said.

Whether they felt the pressure or Guerin Catholic of Noblesville deserved most of the credit, Mater Dei fell behind 13-0 in the first quarter and 16-7 at the half. Led by senior tailback Cody Hess' two third-quarter touchdowns and junior placekicker Travis Wannemuehler's two fourth-quarter field goals, the Wildcats scored 20 unanswered points to post a 27-16 come-from-behind victory.

"It's incredible," said Mater Dei senior quarterback Dane Maurer. "This is the best feeling I've ever had. I love it. To be down 13-0 to a great team and then coming back shows our character. We had to overcome adversity. It was great to see our defense be so clutch, holding them to no points in the second half."

While Guerin Catholic coach Andy Kremer said the Wildcats created havoc by changing up their tactics and blitzing various linebackers in the second half, Mater Dei senior wide receiver-defensive back Hunter Owen said the turnaround was more primal.

"We had a lot of fire," said Owen, who had two interceptions during the Wildcats' second-half surge. "This is our senior year and we couldn't go out like this. Fortunately, the big plays went our way."

For the first time since 2001, Mater Dei will advance to the state championship game. Once again, the Wildcats will play Fort Wayne Bishop Luers. No. 4 Mater Dei (13-1) and two-time defending state champion Bishop Luers (12-1) will meet at 6 p.m. CST this Friday for the Class A state title at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Luers beat Bremen 35-21 in its semistate on Friday night.

Mater Dei and Luers have met twice in the state championship game; the Wildcats won in 2000 and Luers prevailed in '01.

Mater Dei rolls past Reitz

'Cats' Euler finds redemption as squad earns West Side Nut Club Trophy

Courtesy of the Evansville Courier and Press

Nobody had it worse last year for Mater Dei than senior David Euler, as he broke his leg in the Wildcats' 54-21 loss to Reitz for the West Side Nut Club Trophy.

This year, though, nobody had it better than Euler, who scored on both sides of the ball to help lead Mater Dei to a 34-18 win Friday night at Reitz Bowl, its first in the series since 2004.

Euler's 18-yard fumble return for a touchdown on the first play after the Wildcats went three-and-out on their first offensive series set the tone for the game until it was too late for Reitz.

Nice weather helps bring out crowds

DSC_0154EVANSVILLE — A stretch of Franklin Street didn't have vehicles on it this week, but its traffic was still busy. For some vendors at the 90th West Side Nut Club Fall Festival, the foot traffic was busier than ever."We've had record sales everyday this week," said Zoann Hickrod, the chairwoman at Howell General Baptist Church's booth, which was the first to introduce the Pronto Pup (corn dog, but a pancake batter mix) some 55 years ago.

Festival and booth officials said many of the 134 booths, most of which are not-for-profit, did well this week. They attributed it to favorable weather and the appeal of a festival that seemed immune to the struggling economy.
